Looking down, I began trying to read the text I’d received when I collided with someone.
“Oh, I’m sorry!” I said, looking up.
I gasped when I saw the guy who stood before me dressed in a turquoise hoodie, white skinny jeans and turquoise Supras.
Of course, it was none other, than Justin Bieber.
I stared at up at him speechless, an overwhelming sense of hurt and betrayal filling my whole body.
“This is for you.” he continued -- despite my silence -- he handed me a single red rose.
A smile lit up his face as he leaned towards me.
Before I’d even known what was happening; I felt his lips press against my cheek sending a warm sensation throughout my body. The exhilaration of the feeling instantly made me forget all resentment that I felt towards him.
I pulled away suddenly, startled by the sound of Seth’s voice. I looked to see him walking towards us.
“There you are! I was so worried.”
He pulled me close to him in a suffocating hug before holding me at arms length and looking me straight in the eyes.
Justin cleared his throat.
His blue eyes were ice cold with an anger that his faux smile failed to portray as he turned towards Justin.
“Oh, I didn’t see you there.” Seth said.
Although his voice didn’t show any signs of falsity, I knew he was lying.
“I’m Seth, Caitlin’s boyfriend. You must be Justin.”
Seth emphasized the ‘boyfriend’ part.
“Yeah,” Justin nodded “Nice to meet you.”
“Cate’s told me so much about you.” Seth commented continuing his sweet boyfriend facade.
Cate. He called me Cate. He’s gonna hit me when we leave here, I just know it.
“Oh, really?” Justin asked, glancing at me.
He seemed surprised.
“Yeah,” Seth nodded. “But I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about me too.”
Justin opened his mouth to speak, but I beat him to the punch.
“Uh, we should probably get back to the party. I think Chaz said that we’re going to play games next.” I said.
“Yeah, I think you’re right.” Justin agreed. “Let’s go.”
He started walking towards the basement door and I followed him.
Seth came up from behind and wrapped his arm tightly around me.
I tried to wiggle out of his grasp, but he only held on tighter making me feel claustrophobic.
Sure enough, Chaz was starting to have everyone gather around to play a game.
“Here’s the Birthday Princess.” he said when he saw me. “Now we can get started!”
I sat on the floor with Justin on one side of me and Seth on the other.
Seth reached over and grabbed my hand. He squeezed it so tight, I thought he was trying to break it -- which, he probably was. I could tell by his breathing that he was mad as hell. He was always super possessive around other guys and I usually just ignored it, but with Justin around it made me uncomfortable.
“Caitlin, you’re supposed to sit up here on your thrown!” Ryan said, gesturing to a chair that had been decorated.
I stood up gratefully and sat down.
“Alright,” Chaz said. “In this game, each of you are going to get a piece of paper that looks like this.”
He held up a white paper that appeared to be a quiz.
“It’s filled with questions as you can see. You have to fill out the questions the way that you think Caitlin would answer and then after you’re done, we’ll ask her the same questions and see who got the most right. You’ve got five minutes.” Chaz continued. “Any questions?”
Everyone shook their head.
“Alright, go for it!” Chaz shouted.
I watched as the guests’ tapped their pens and pencils against their legs scrutinizing every question.
I turned to see Chaz standing next to me.
“I see you finally ran into Justin.”
“He’s been here the whole time?” I questioned.
“He was trying to get up the nerve to talk to you.” Chaz chuckled. “I was like, ‘Dude, you dated her for heaven’s sake! How hard can it be to just say “Hey?” Go talk to her’. I guess he finally did.”
“Yeah, he did.” I said simply.
“You know this party was all his idea.” he commented.
I looked at him my eyebrows lifted.
“Why do you seem so shocked?” he asked.
“I don’t know.” I shrugged.
“It’s because you two haven’t talked in so long, isn’t it?” Chaz questioned.
“I guess I thought he’d forgotten about me.”
“Oh, Caitlin Beadles, you’re unforgettable!” He laughed. “Seriously though, Justin would never forget about you.”
I turned my attention back to the guests.
I noticed that Justin and Seth had both sat their pencils down. So had my best friend, Holly
Chaz glanced at his watch.
“Your five minutes are up!” He announced. “When you get an answer wrong, go sit on the other side of the room. I’ll keep reading questions until there’s only one person left. Good luck!”
I glanced at Seth who had a smug look on his face as if he just KNEW that he was going to win.
“Okay, first question: What’s your favorite color?” Chaz asked.
“Pink.” I said easily.
“Since when? I thought it was turquoise!” my classmate, Kevin said as went over to the other side of the room.
I laughed softly.
“What’s your favorite dessert?”
“Chocolate cake.” I replied.
“What!? You told me that you LOVE cheesecake and you don’t even like chocolate ice cream!” Amy, a girl from my church small group, whined.
The questions kept coming each getting harder and harder until it was down to three people: Holly, Justin, and Seth.
I could feel my palms starting to sweat. I silently prayed that Holly would win.
“Would you rather live on an island with just your family closest friends or in a big city where you don’t know anyone?”
“Live on an island, definitely.” I said.
“What?” Holly asked. “I was positive you’d choose the city!”
She stuck her tongue out at me before sitting with the rest of the guests.
“Whoa,” Ryan said. “It’s down to Caitlin’s ex-boyfriend verses her current boyfriend. This is gonna be good.”
I shot him a look that said, ‘Shut up.’
He simply laughed.
“Okay, last question if you both get it right, then we’ll go into sudden death.” Chaz announced.
Sudden death? What is this, Family Feud?
“Which of these are you the most afraid of: spiders, sharks, or snakes?”
My mind spun back to a trip I’d taken with my church in the 5th grade. A poisonous spider had crept into my sleeping bag and bit me, causing me to go to the emergency room. To this day, I have an extreme phobia when it comes to spiders.
“Spiders.” I answered.
I watched as Seth’s mouth dropped open.
“Spiders?” he questioned.
“I thought it was sharks, especially after your boating accident.”
“I’m afraid of sharks too, but I’m more afraid of spiders.”
“That’s stupid.” Seth said.
“No, it’s not.” Justin argued.
“Yes, it is. You can step on a spider; not a shark.”
“You weren’t there when she almost died from a venomous spider’s bite.”
I was a bit surprised that Justin knew why I had chosen spiders. I didn’t think that he would’ve remembered.
I twirled the red rose he’d given me around in my hand, it seemed to have a new meaning.
Seth rolled his eyes.
“She’s here now, isn’t she?”
Justin glared at him.
“Okay,” Chaz said noticing the tension. “Let’s open presents now.”
“Good idea.” I agreed.
I sat on the floor and began opening my many presents each one was cool, unique, and showed that all of my friends knew me extremely well. I loved all of the gifts I’d received.
“Thank you guys so much.” I said, grinning.
They all echoed their ‘you’re welcome’s.
“Oh, there’s one more over here.” Ryan said handing me a perfectly wrapped present.
I opened it up carefully, not wanting to ruin the pretty paper.
I slid out a scrapbook and opened it up.
I smiled when I read ‘Caity’ there’s one only one person who called me that.
I flipped through the pages and saw several pictures of Justin and I throughout the years. Below the pictures were sayings and captions. Some were funny and some where sweet.
“This is beautiful.” I said. “Where’s Justin?”
Chaz and Ryan shrugged.
I stood up, ran up the stairs, and opened the front door.
I spotted him walking down the street.
“Justin!” I called.
He turned as the sound of my voice and I ran towards him.
I wrapped my arms around him in a big hug.
“Thank you.” I said.
“For what?” he questioned.
“Everything.” I looked up at him. “You made this a really great birthday.”
“Oh, it was nothing.” he said, starting to walk towards his car again.
I followed him.
“Where are you going?”
“Back to the hotel, I guess.”
“Already?” I inquired.
He nodded, “It’s obvious your boyfriend doesn’t like me and I don’t want the two of us butting heads to ruin your special day.”
I bit my lip.
We walked in silence until we’d reached his car.
“Well, if you’re leaving, can you take me home?”
“Yeah, sure.” he nodded opening the passenger door.
I heard the sound of the Devil’s most studious pupil calling my name.
I ignored him and climbed into Justin’s car.
Justin climbed into the driver’s seat, started the car and was about to pull off when Seth appeared on my side of the car.
He banged on the door.
I slowly rolled the window down.
“What?” I asked.
“Where are you going? I promised your parents I’d bring you home.”
“Oh, I didn’t know.” I said. “Justin already agreed to take me home.”
“I really wanted to take you home.” Seth said.
Of course you do, you want to scream at me.
“It’s okay, Caity.” Justin said with a smile. “Happy birthday.”
The sound of his voice calling me by the nickname he’d given me, made me want to crawl in his arms and be his girlfriend again.
“Bye, I’ll see you tomorrow. I promised Christian I’d stop by.”
“Okay.” I said.
I reluctantly climbed out of Justin’s car and followed Seth to his car.
I opened the car door for myself since Seth didn’t even offer to open it for me.
I sat down in the passenger seat as he sped off down the street.
“You wanna tell me what the hell that was about?” he asked, not taking his eyes off the road.
“What are you talking about?” I asked innocently.
“You know what I’m talking about!” he screamed at me as he pulled over.“ Just what did you think you were doing? Sneaking off with that Bieber kid.”
“I didn’t ‘sneak off’--”
My words were cut off my Seth’s fist colliding with my jaw.
Tears instantly sprung to my eyes.
“Don’t talk back to me!” He yelled. “I’m NOT going to put up with you cheating on me.”
“I wasn’t cheating on you. Justin and I are just--”
“Just friends?” Seth asked.
I nodded only to feel Seth backhand me across the face.
“Stop lying to me!” He screamed.
I felt my whole body shake from fear.
“Stay away from him, Cate. I mean it. I don’t want you anywhere near him. You got that?”
I nodded slowly scared to death of what would happen if I didn’t.
“Good.” he said. “Now, what do you say we go back to my place and have a romantic night?”
I didn’t say anything.
“Babe?” he said his voice icy.
“O-okay.” I stuttered.
Seth drove us back to his place.
I climbed out of the car and walked into his house slowly.
I went into his bathroom and locked the door.
I stared at my bruised body and broke into uncontrollable sobs.
My anger towards Justin returned again as I looked at the red rose in my hand.
Once more, he’d left me.
Why couldn’t he have just told Seth that he wanted to take me home?
I ripped the flower into a million pieces and slid onto the cold tile floor.
I felt numb, helpless and all alone.
Nothing hurts worst than having your heart broken by your first love.
